Matching Vocabulary activities
by Silvina P. Hillar
"Experiences that are
multisensory, dramatic, unusual, or emotionally strong are
remembered far longer and in more
detail than ordinary routine experiences" -
Paul Ginnis (from The Teacher's Toolkit)
When we want students
to recognize vocabulary we can do hundreds of activities. In order to avoid
translation we can use plenty of matching activities using images instead of
translating into their mother tongue.
We can look for such
interactive activities in the web, but if luck is not on, there is always the
option to create one. Besides we can teach some specific vocabulary and want to
teach and drill that vocabulary in particular. So, we can use the same software
in the previous post and we can design the matchin activity.
When choosing images
from the web, they must be public, because there is a lot of material which is
copyrighted and we might not get into trouble!
Two key elements to
bear in mind when designing this type of activity are:
- The words (vocabulary)
- The images
Then we need to upload
the pictures into one part of the activity and then the words, or the other way
round.
You can see how to
upload the pictures in the foregoing screenshot:
The activity is the
following:
