Matching words and pictures

Matching Vocabulary activities

by Silvina P. Hillar

"Experiences that are multisensory, dramatic, unusual, or emotionally strong are
remembered far longer and in more detail than ordinary routine experiences" -
Paul Ginnis (from The Teacher's Toolkit)

When we want students to recognize vocabulary we can do hundreds of activities. In order to avoid translation we can use plenty of matching activities using images instead of translating into their mother tongue.

We can look for such interactive activities in the web, but if luck is not on, there is always the option to create one. Besides we can teach some specific vocabulary and want to teach and drill that vocabulary in particular. So, we can use the same software in the previous post and we can design the matchin activity.

When choosing images from the web, they must be public, because there is a lot of material which is copyrighted and we might not get into trouble!

Two key elements to bear in mind when designing this type of activity are:
  • *      The words (vocabulary)
  • *      The images

Then we need to upload the pictures into one part of the activity and then the words, or the other way round.

You can see how to upload the pictures in the foregoing screenshot:

The activity is the following:

e-Matching sentences

“Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and

motivating them, the teacher is the most important.”

- Bill Gates

How to use connectors in order to match sentences.

we can use resources from the web. We can use free open source software which allows you to create activities in which students can match sentences. You can afterwards upload it to your website or online platform. In the case that we do not have an online platform to work with, we can create one to work with students.

Let’s create a quiz using our free software and upload it to our online platform. After downloading the software and displaying it, let’s take advantage of its resources! Look at the following activity for students to connect their ideas. After clicking on the desired activity, you have to fill in the blanks, as shown in the following screenshot:

match

After filling in the blanks, save the file in order to upload it into the platform. Just some more steps to go and the activity is ready to be uploaded in the platform!

eTeaching through games

Books

What's the first things kids do when they leave school and get home?

The answer should be the same as they do in the class because that's what they really like, but in most cases kids do many different things!

When having a gamified class students tend to do the same things in the classroom as when they arrive home, but if your class is not a gamified one students may do plenty of different things. How can classrooms be gamified? That's a very simple question with a very simple answer. Let's cater for all the needs to bear in mind in order to do it!
How many times have you played the well-known game pacman? Would you like to embed it in your class? How often do you use the interactive whiteboard with games?
How about this?

Needless to write more! I'm inviting you to participate in a new Workshop eTEACHING THROUGH GAMES.
WHEN? February 21st
If you need more details please contact through inbox. Pacman is just a start! You can't imagine what's next!
See you @round

Embedding Technology in the classroom

Embedding Technology in the Classroom

Bridge the gap between classical education & modern technologies

by Silvina Paola Hillar

Tips & Tricks to enhance your classes hand in hand with resources from our beloved web 2.0 in order to design reading comprehension, writing & composing activities.

It is technology that helps us to enhance the learning experience of our students. That is the reason why, we are changing the everyday appearance of our classes. A well-known proverb says:
“A good workman is known by his tools”.
Therefore, it is time to change the tools of our teaching and take advantage of the computing devices available today and tomorrow. Hardware will continue to advance and offer different types of devices which may soon appear in the market. Thus, we should be willing to include them although they do not exist yet.

We have to reshape our courses in order to allow them work properly in these special devices. It is not impossible to do it! We have to think carefully about the type of activity that we can develop in each case according to the device in which we use the course.

Students are always ready when they listen that a new device is to take part in their learning experience. There happen to be many available apps for many of the hardware devices that we will deal afterwards with. It is also advisable to explore them deeply.

It is also possible to build in accessibility features to make it easy for any student to benefit from all the resources that each of these devices offer. Some of the features accommodate students with physical impairments, visual and hearing challenges and different learning styles. Thus, it is an important aspect to take into account why to use these devices in planning a class.

The world of education is revolutionizing because we replace traditional classrooms with virtual ones. Moreover, what we need is a shift in our thinking in order to explore the future of learning using special devices covering all the dimensions available at present.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Are we ready to reach it?

There happen to be three types of learning which educators in the past couldn’t possible think of, no matter how hard they thought: e-learning (electronic learning), b-learning (blended learning) and m-learning (mobile learning).

The types of activities to be designed for m-learning are the ones that should be done anywhere and at any time! Besides there happens to be many educational apps which can be used, so perhaps it is sometimes advisable to change the desktop computer for another tool of choice in a particular context. Mobile learning should be combined with social media or social interaction activities, could be a way to work.

We sometimes need to figure out how can we start designing courses or some educational materials that could take advantage of these special hardware devices which can be used to carry out this type of learning experience. We should bear in mind that great teaching meets students wherever they are. Thus, it could lead to a wonderful learning experience!

We will examine several ways that we can use to reshape the features of our teaching using the portable device as well as the traditional desktop in order to create a challenging learning environment to our students. Moreover, performing more engaging tasks it is more likely that not only students but also teacher feel motivated towards cruising access barriers.

To sum up, it would be appropriate to write one last sentences: mobile learning is anytime and everywhere. Let’s explore what type of tasks are to be the ones for this type of learning!
