Gaming or teaching? What's next?

Why should we include Games in our classrooms?

Traditional classrooms are boring nowadays and we need to spice them up using what our students like rather than what we like or we feel comfortable with. Why not include what they like playing with? It is of course a challenge for the teacher not for the student. Be corageous and change!

Why are traditional classroom boring for children because sometimes toddlers instead of playing with teddy bears are using iPads or tablets to entertain themselves!

Snakes and Ladders, Crosswords puzzles, Tic-Tac-Toe, Hangman, Wordsearch can be created online and embedded in our learning platform, but they are games which have been used for many years and they seem to be a bit old fashioned, so why don't we try games students like?

We can code easily using Minecraft and save a video for the class or we can code together with students. we should know how it would be more profitable for our students and the equipment available at school. we can watch a video how to code easily with Minecraft:

Brainstorming ideas using Forums in Moodle Cloud

By Silvina P. Hillar

Brainstorming ideas using Forums

In this postwe are going to connect different images. We are going to use Forums so that all the students can comment on two different things, and we are going to guide their writing with general questions. I propose that the title gives them a hint on what they are going to deal with, but the images that they are going to see are two websites with information. You may wonder, "Why?" Remember the premise of reading before writing. They are to read about two different places and then they are going to write about them. A way to enhance the students' vocabulary is to make them read and give them hints on it.

We are going to design a Forum activity. We enter the course and choose the weekly outline in which we want to add the activity. Let's Moodle it!

To design the activity previously introduced, you are going to follow these steps:
1.      Click on Add an activity and choose Forum. Click on Add, as shown in the following screenshot:

2.      In the Forum name block, write the title of the activity, and in Forum introduction, write what they are going to do. Visit the two websites and brainstorm about the best place to visit.
3. Later, answer the guiding questions (it is somewhat similar to the "Six Thinking Hats Technique" by Edward de Bono).

4.    We are going to create a link to two websites. One of them is the official website of the Statue of Liberty, and the other is a link to the official website of Yosemite National Park. Do not mention them in the activity.
5.     Complete the necessary blocks to make the links to these websites in the Moodle course.
6.      Choose Question and Answer Forum.
7. Click on Save and display. The activity appears as shown in the following screenshot:

Students are to click on Add a new question, and an editor appears where they can write the answers to the questions given there. They can also keep these websites open in different Windows so that they don't have to close the activity.

The aim is that each student should comment on these two different places about what they think. They are expected to write simple paragraphs, as they will write articles or descriptions in further chapters. In order to answer these questions, they will have to think and use some of the vocabulary that they have already read in those websites.

Using Facebook to poll

Using Facebook to poll

by Silvina Hillar

we can create a survey exercise. In this exercise, students can update the content of a table about the likes and dislikes regarding books have already read and video games that they have already played. We can also create two links to websites or embed the poll that we created in Facebook.
We can also ask more people about this sharing the poll on different facebook account or inviting friends to answer it. In this case there are two questions, people should answer with the name of their favourite book and the name of the favourite video game.
Later, students can gather more data for the survey. Apart from that, they can write a report on this topic later.
We have to follow these steps:

1. Enter the following website.
2. Click on New Poll | Form Poll.
3. Complete the necessary blocks in order to design the desired poll.
4. Share the poll or embed it in the virtual classroom.

Example:

Protecting Students' Rights and Privacy

There is an organization which protects the rights and privacy of students. Before designing this type of activity it would be advisable to take this into consideration.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects students' rights and privacy. Disclosing personal information of the student should be consented by the parents as well as from the school. You can read more in the following website.

PIRATES, RABBITS & ELVES

"Any teacher that can be replaced by a computer, deserves to be."
-David Thornburg

by Silvina P. Hillar

Children are to be attracted to whatever means adventure to them. So taking this into account we should bear it in mind when planning an initial project in order to motivate them for the rest of the year.

In my opinion, an initial project can be a further step towards loving the subject; or not!

As regards pirates, well known characters pirates are to be taken into account to work with. Worthless to mention, you should know which ones to work with according to students' age.
Pirates are to be hooked with anything that comes to your mind, for instance rabbits or any other forest animal that students feel attracted to. In this case, rabbits were to be chosen. Why?
I came across The Tale of Peter Rabbit, by Beatrix Potter. It can be read and combined with a set of videos appealing to children as follows:

"WHAT ELSE CAN I DO? I'M OUT OF IDEAS!" These thoughts belong to a desperate teacher who wants something new for students. If only did I meet an elf ...
"THAT'S IT! Elves are in the forest where the pirates landed and Peter Rabbit lives, so that's the spicy element in our project AN ELF".
Bearing in mind that March 17th is St Patrick's day we can teach students who a leprechaun is.
CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) activities are essential to any bilingual education. So, that's it. We teach not only about leprechauns but also about Irish traditional elements such as: rainbows, golden coins, pots and so on.
Furthermore, in the case that we are preparing students for an international exam such as Cambridge YLE we focus on part 1 vocabulary.
Everything can be combined taking into account a little bit of imagination granted by an elf.
